The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
